Download a PDF with general information related to the Annual Meeting. Hello -- Almost time to pack! We're looking forward to hosting you all at Asilomar in just a few more days. Many people have asked about how to ship packages to Monterey. Please read below and let me know if you have any questions. Thanks! Shipping Packages: If you are shipping your own items this week, please remember to send them to ESNERR, not to the Asilomar. The reserve address is below. Please mark your packages clearly "FOR ANNUAL MEETING" and note if your package is for the registration desk or for you to pick up. Please note that items must arrive at ESNERR by Friday, Oct 31st. Becky will bring all items marked for the annual meeting to the Asilomar on Saturday, Nov 1. [If you have a small package, I suggest you put it in your luggage to reduce work for Becky and chance of loss.] If you are expecting packages, please check with Candace at the registration desk when you arrive at the Asilomar. She will let you know where you can pick up your materials. ESNERR Attn: Candace Renger 1700 Elkhorn Road Watsonville, CA 95076 Poster Size: The maximum size for posters is 4' x 4'. |
Greetings fellow members of the National Estuarine Research Reserve System,
We are busy planning the annual meeting, and it is shaping up well. One bit of news is that we are striving to make this a carbon neutral event! Check back soon for more information. The facility at Asilomar is a certified “Green Business” and has recently been given a GreenPath award for its continued commitment to the environment.
With the great location at Asilomar (right on the Pacific Ocean near Monterey, CA) and all the exciting speakers and sessions, we know you will enjoy yourself while you are here. In addition to scintillating plenary speakers and group meetings, we are also planning a full day field training at the Elkhorn Slough NERR which will include a catered dinner with local, fresh food and music. We are also proud to announce that we will have an evening reception at the renowned Monterey Bay Aquarium which will be open privately to our group (thanks to a generous donation).
So, save the dates and begin thinking about your travel arrangements. We’ll update the website regularly as planning details are finalized. Meanwhile, if you have any questions about travel or the event itself, please don’t hesitate to contact our meeting coordinator, Candace Renger. She can be reached by email at candace@elkhornslough.org or by phone at (510) 524-1937.
Sincerely, Your hosts – The Staff at Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve
NERRS 08 MEETING SUMMARY
The National Estuarine Research
Reserves System is a network of 27 areas representing different
biogeographic regions of the United States that are protected for long-term
research, water-quality monitoring, education and coastal stewardship.
Established by the Coastal Zone Management Act of 1972, as amended,
the reserve system is a partnership program between the National Oceanic
and Atmospheric Administration and the coastal states. NOAA provides
funding, national guidance and technical assistance. Each reserve is
managed on daily basis by a lead state agency or university, with input
from local partners.
Reserve staff work with local communities and regional groups to address
natural resource management issues, such as non-point source pollution,
habitat restoration and invasive species. Through integrated research
and education, the reserves help communities develop strategies to deal
successfully with these coastal resource issues. Reserves provide adult
audiences with training on estuarine issues of concern in their local
communities. They offer field classes for K-12 students and support
teachers through professional development programs in marine education.
Reserves also provide long-term water quality monitoring as well as
opportunities for both scientists and graduate students to conduct research
in a “living laboratory.”
WHAT: The 24th National Estuarine Research Reserve System Annual Meeting
2008 Host: Elkhorn Slough National
Estuarine Research Reserve
WHEN: November 2-7, 2008
WHERE: Asilomar Conference
Grounds, Pacific Grove, California
WHO: Approximately 210 core staff
from the 27 National Estuarine Research Reserves (NERRS), the Estuarine
Research Reserve (ERD) of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
(NOAA), Reserve friends groups, and invited special guests.
WHY: The purpose of this meeting is to develop both long and short-term plans, program strategies, and budgets for the system as a whole. The meeting also serves to integrate the program sectors (management, research, education, stewardship) and provide relevant, targeted information and training. This is a “working/decision making” meeting of interdisciplinary colleagues within the NERRS who are guided by similar mandates and funding sources. As the primary planning meeting for the year, attendance by core staff is a grant requirement for NOAA funding.
